What does a civil engineer do?

Civil engineers work in a diversified working environment that is characterized by interdisciplinary cooperation. Civil engineers design our technical environment, plan buildings and infrastructures and play a substantial role in their realisation, maintenance and disposal. They plan and implement measures for sustainability, environmental protection and disaster prevention.

They work in engineering offices, construction companies, the building materials industry, public administration as well as in university and non-university research institutions. Civil engineers cooperate with representatives of other specialist fields, such as Architects, physicians and environmental scientists.

 

What are the requirements?

Civil engineering can be studied by anyone who is interested in technical and scientific processes and the solution of complex tasks.

The prerequisite is a university entrance qualification (“Matura” or similar). Please notice, that the language of instruction is German. Therefore, you have to prove sufficient knowledge of German at Level C1 of the Common European Framework Reference for Languages (GERS) for admission.

Furthermore, knowledge of descriptive geometry has to be proved. If descriptive geometry has not been taught as a separate subject in school, it can be made up for in a separate supplementary course (“Ergänzungskurs zur Darstellenden Geometrie“) in the first semesters at the TU Vienna.

 

How are the studies structured?

The studies at the TU Vienna consist of a bachelor’s programme “Civil Engineering” ("Bauingenieurwesen") and master’s programme “Civil Engineering Science” ("Bauingenieurwissenschaften") based on it.

 

What are the career prospects?

In general, the situation at the job market is very good and the majority of the master’s graduates already get an appropriate job before graduation.

As a master’s graduate of the TU Vienna, you have personal development opportunities in many fields. You will be prepared to take on responsibility in management positions at home and abroad.

You can work in construction companies from industry and trade, civil engineering offices and planning companies, but also as a project developer or for property developers, supply and disposal companies, builders and operators of traffic infrastructure, building materials industry and testing centres, financial service providers and insurance companies, many specialist departments of the federal, state and local authorities, construction laboratories and research institutes.
